No, I’m not talking about the movie of Jackie Chan, Rush Hour. I’m talking about the state of my life these days. Everything seems to be in RUSH especially in school! Classes for this semester will end on September 30 so mos of us are doing evaluation-reading, speaking, writing and listening skills. How could you expect me to finish evaluating about 500 toddlers when I only got to see them once a week? So here’s what I do:
1. I’m required to make grades for K-2. I need to grade 4 skills accordingly:
Writing- 30%
Speaking- 30%
Reading- 20%
Listening- 20%
Total= 100%
2. Because we have workbook for K-2, this is where I get my grades for WRITING. Each exercises has 3 points so I add the points they garnered for the 10 exercises we did and there I get the result for the WRITING SKILL.
3. Starting last August 28, I started my Reading test. There are only 10 words to be read but I let them spell it first before they’ll read. That makes 20 points (and that’s where I get the 20%). For 50 minutes, I was only able to let an average of 20 students out of 37 finished reading. If the adviser will be there to help me in calling out students and assist in classroom management, I could let about a maximum of 27 students finished the reading test. While I conducted the test, I let the other students do their workbook exercise on connecting nos. 1-10 to finish the picture and let them color it. Most of them finish the activity for only 10 minutes, so I need the teacher-adviser to give them additional task to make them occupied.
Here’s the words for Reading Test:
1. map
2. tap
3. mat
4. bat
5. hen
6. pen
7. fan
8. pan
9. one
10. red
So far, majority of the 4-years old could spell nos.9 and 10 but have hard time reading them:(
4. This week I continued the Reading Test while the rest do the exercise on connecting nos.1-20 to complete the picture of a teddy bear and then color it. I’m rushing on finishing the reading test so that I can proceed on conducting the speaking test! After all students READ, I called 5 of them to be in front. I let them be in line according to their student number 1-5. Then I ask them one by one:
1. How are you today?- 5 pts.
2. How old are you?- 5 pts.
3. Sing ABC- 10 pts.
4. Recite ABC- 10 pts.
Total of 30 points (30%)
In this way, the good students could help the weak ones in reciting. I could finish at least 3 groups before we run out of time! Next week, I could start the Listening Test (students will be given test papers with pictures. They’re going to listen to my dictations and then circle the correct ones. Hopefully, I could finish 10 items (x2 to make it 20 points for the 20% ) and then I could continue with the Speaking Test. Why the rush? Because after this week, these students will have their Thai Final test and I don’t have the time to ever meet them again! It’s grading time for me and that means I gonna make about 500 grade cards!
After the grades, I gonna prepare worksheets, visual aids and other things needed for our English camp on October 4-17!
But first things first, I’m really in dire need for material handling equipment to move these workbooks from my desk, pretty please!
